My first pet was a cat. I had grown up in a home with a number of cats, and it was therefore not surprising that when I established my own ‘household’ after college, I opted for a cat as a pet.
Yet my choice of a cat as a first pet was informed by a number of other factors, in addition to the fact that I had grown up with cats, literally speaking. One of these other factors was that the block of apartments where I was living at the time would have made it impossible – or at least highly inconvenient – for me to keep any other type of a pet anyway.
My acquisition of that first pet was interesting. It was in the early days of E-commerce, and I had been told that I could find ‘anything’ online. I decided to test the truthfulness of this assertion by checking out whether I could find a cat for sale online. As it turns out, finding one was not hard at all! All I had to do was visit one of the online classified sites where they had pets for sale, select one whose description I fell in love with, and within two days, I had my new cat (then quite a kitten) sleeping in my garage!
